Technical & Copy Writing – How to Write a “Hamburger”
“Hamburger Model” is a writing paradigm used in some schools and writing programs. It’s a quick and useful way of explaining how to organize the content of a typical non-fiction article, paper, or other kinds of similar prose.
Think about the main parts of a juicy hamburger: Top bun, bottom bun, and whatever goes in between.
You can organize your writing in a similar way.
TOP BUN: Introduce your topic in the title, in a clear manner. The more specific the title the better it is. “How to Make $54,350 in 8 Days by Selling Civil War Era Jewelry on E-Bay” is a much better a title than “How to Make Money Selling Jewelry”.
After the title, present your main argument in a single sentence. Then give a very top-level outline of the things that you will cover in the rest of the article.
JUICY HAMBURGER WITH THE WORKS: The mid-section of your non-fiction work should be devoted to developing the topics you’ve announced in your broad outline. This is the place to turn on the juice and marshal every argument, metaphor, analogy and other tricks of the trade to explain your point of view, present the facts, construct a logical argument, and win the day.
BOTTOM BUN: This is where you conclude your article by rounding up your main point. This section should be brief but firm, just like the bottom layer of a good hamburger.
