Document Menu of Adobe "Writer" (Professional)
I know — the good and hard-working folks over at Adobe do not like me refer to Adobe Professional as “Writer” but there are 2 good reasons why I do so:
1) “Writer” is a term well-established within the technical writing community. Every tech writer I know refers to Adobe Professional as “Adobe Writer.” I’m not inventing anything. I’m just deferring to the industry consensus.
2) Opposite of “professional” is not “reader” but “amateur.” It does not make sense to delegate Adobe Reader to the status of an “amateur” application. If it were up to me I’d name these two sister applications “Adobe Reader” and “Adobe Writer” from the very beginning.
The Adobe Writer is jam-packed with features so useful that I couldn’t do without them even for a single day.
Here is one such feature that I use frequently: the Document menu.
This menu allows you to insert, extract, delete or crop PDF pages. Very useful stuff especially if you’re working with legacy documents — and which one of us doesn’t? The technology advances so rapidly that legacy formats go out of style but thanks to the PDF format we can still have access to documents created with applications which are no longer used.
But what if you wanted to make a change in these legacy PDF documents? That’s where Adobe Writer comes to the rescue like a champ!
For example, what if you wanted to change the logo, address and both covers of a 100 page PDF legacy document?
Easy. By using the Document menu commands I extract the page or re-create it from scratch. Then I delete those PDF pages that I do not want and insert the new ones. The fact that I can open PDF pages inside Adobe Illustrator and manipulate them anyway I want is an added bonus of working with Adobe group of applications. They talk each other’s language real well.
Cropping is a useful Document menu command as well. It allows you to change the page and margin size of any page(s) you like and then save them as a new document.
Cropping screen comes with a drop-down list of most popular page sizes which makes shifting from one size document to another really easy.
