Adobe FrameMaker 12 comes with three different user interface options:

  1. Unstructured
  2. Structured
  3. XML

All these options offer the user a different default menu bar but the very same starter screen.

How to select an interface

When you first launch FrameMaker 12, the program displays the following dialog box:
FrameMaker 12 Interface Choices
Select one of the above options to display the following options screen:
FrameMaker 12 Interface Choices 2
Select either grey or color icons, in regular size or large size, and then click OK to launch the program.
Once you select an interface, FM remembers that. When you close and restart the application, FM displays the last interface selection you have made.

How to change the interface

After FM launches with the last interface you have selected, you can change it by selecting Edit > Preferences from the menu which launches the Preferences screen:
FrameMaker 12 Edit - Preferences
Select another option from the Product Interface drop-down list. Click OK and restart the program for the change to take effect.

Menu Bar Options

For the standard Unstructured interface:
FrameMaker 12 Menu Bar REGULAR
For the Structured interface:
FrameMaker 12 Menu Bar STRUCTURED
For the XML interface:
FrameMaker 12 Menu Bar XML
As you can see, the Structured and XML interfaces offer almost exactly same menu bars except for the Format option. XML menu bar does not have any Format options.

Start Screen Options

For the standard Unstructured interface:
FrameMaker 12 Unstructured Start Screen
For the Structured interface:
FrameMaker 12 Structured Start Screen
For the XML interface:
FrameMaker XML AUTHOR 12 Start Screen
The first two start screens are similar but the Structured start screen offers “DITA Map” and “XML” options which the Unstructured standard interface does not offer.
The XML start screen is similar to the Structured but it does not offer any templates. Instead, it offers a “CMS Connection” option just like the Unstructured screen..
