There are so many new writing niches sprouting every day. As a technical writer you may want to keep an eye on these developments. If you don’t, you might very well be leaving money on the table.

Alternative (or Renewable) Energy” is one such blooming niche.

This sector includes (but probably is not limited to) the following sub-sectors (as listed by Wikipedia):

  • Biofuel
  • Biomass
  • Biogas
  • Geothermal
  • Hydro power
  • Solar energy
  • Tidal power
  • Wave power

GHG (Greenhouse Gases) is a sub-niche that we should also mention.

If you are a writer with a good scientific or engineering background and an interest in environmental issues and global warming, you might consider specializing in alternative/renewable energy since the need for technical communicators in that sector is increasing.

In your next job search you may also include such positions and other offerings in the alternative energy and environmental protection sectors which include the sub-specialty of “carbon trading” as well.

Here is a list of other fast-growing “green job” sectors available for technical writers:

1. Urban food production in green buildings and city gardens.

2. Water filtration and purification products, services, and systems.

3. Clean cars, transportation systems that use solar, wind, and electric power sources.

4. Recycling and composting systems, products, and facilities.

5. Green builders that use recycled materials like plastic bottles, aluminum cans, old tires and discarded and recycled materials.

6. Solar cell manufacturing, installation and maintenance industry.

7. Wind turbine manufacturing, installation and maintenance industry.

8. Wave energy system manufacturing, installation and maintenance industry.

9. Biofuel cells, chargers, and system manufacturing, installation and maintenance industry.
